The incident – which last barely 20 seconds, – occurred as they watched a Meteor jet fighter returning to base. The following day Flight Lieutenant John Kilburn wrote a report based on the sighting witnessed by him and four colleagues. He said as the fighter descended they noticed an object in the sky flying at 10 to 20, feet some five miles behind the Meteor. The object was silver and circular and appeared to be travelling much slower than the fighter but on the same course. At first they thought it was a parachute, then the Meteor turned towards Dishforth and the object followed but after a few seconds stopped its pendulous motion and descent and then began to rotate on its axis. There were several other sightings at that time and, reportedly, a radar confirmation of the incident.
Only quarter of West Yorkshire’s fixed cameras actively catching speeding drivers, figures show
Inside Out – South East: Well some people want to disagree. For them there’s the new phenomenon of speed dating. You could meet a dozen potential matches and still get home in time to peruse the personals before bed.
Motorists know that roadworks and diversions can cause a nuisance when travelling on the roads. They can create delays, make us late and throw us off track when trying to get from A to B.
ONLY a quarter of fixed speed cameras in West Yorkshire are actually switched on and catching offenders, new figures have revealed. Data released by 36 of the 45 police forces in the UK found that four have no fixed speed cameras at all and 13 have fewer than half actively catching speeding drivers. A Freedom of Information request was sent to all 45 forces and their speed camera partnerships asking how many fixed speed cameras they have and how many are active.
Nine refused to disclose the information or failed to respond. The figures cover all police fixed speed cameras, but not the mobile devices forces also use. All forces and speed camera partnerships that responded said they deployed regular mobile speed cameras across their areas. They also said they regularly review which fixed cameras are turned on. West Yorkshire-based road safety charity Brake described the figures as concerning and called for all cameras to be switched on, while AA president Edmund King said the high number of inactive cameras was down to pressure on budgets.
The forces which said none of their fixed speed cameras were active were Cleveland, Durham, North Yorkshire and Northamptonshire. The Northamptonshire force said it turned its cameras off in April , but has left the structures in place to deter speeders. Staffordshire Police have fixed cameras across their patch, but just 14 of them are active, while the Derbyshire force operates cameras with just 10 of them catching speeders.
West Midlands Police, who announced in that their old speed cameras were being switched off, said they now had eight new average speed cameras.
